Absolutely, no formal qualifications are required for the inspection of the smoke alarms, however they do have to be maintained and installed in accordance with AS3786. You have to study the location and the correct type of smoke alarms to install to suit the construction year of the property and its class. Sufficient record keeping is also required.

New regulations for landlords

Victorian Legislation now requires rental providers to conduct annual smoke alarm checks, meaning that smoke alarms, both in type and location, must be installed and maintained according to regulations.

Smoke alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas or bedrooms, and they’re also required to be installed near the staircase even if there are no bedrooms on that level. For specific installation guidelines please visit the CFA Victoria website for more details.

What type of smoke alarms should I install?

In Victoria, both photoelectric and ionisation types are approved for use as household smoke alarms. The year the home was built affects what type of smoke alarm needs to be installed, any pre 1997 homes require only the 9v battery powered smoke alarm, where as post 97 or majorly renovated homes require the 240v type.

Do I need to install interconnected smoke alarms?
